PROGRAM LOCATION
The program is located in the heart of Venice at the
Istituto Venezia. Venice is unique; with no cars, travel is by foot and ferry.
The institute is in the district of Dorsoduro, a short walk from such places as
St. Marks Square and the Grand Canal, and with easy access to the train station
and bus station. Although Venice itself is located on a group of islands in the
Adriatic Sea, travel to other parts of Italy and the rest of Europe is quite
convenient and trains and buses run frequently...
ELIGIBILITY
No previous knowledge of Italian is required. Students
must be currently enrolled in college or planning to attend in the fall/spring
semester.
STAFF
Full time supervisory personnel will be available for
the duration of the program. They will be providing supervision, counseling and
all other necessary services, as well as accompanying participants in
program-sponsored activities.
CLASSES
The purpose of the Italian language courses is to
teach students spoken and written Italian. The direct method is combined with
grammar and syntax to give equal importance to the oral and written aspects.
Students will attend classes Monday through Friday from
9:00am to 1:00pm for 3 weeks for a total of 60 hours. All classes, from Beginner
to Advanced, are conducted in Italian by instructors experienced in intensive
language instruction.
Even students who are absolute beginners will find that
they will have no trouble learning.
At the beginning of the course, students take a simple
written test and have an interview to determine their level. If, at any time a
student feels that he or she is in the wrong level, a different placement can be
made. Students should arrive at school at 8.30 am on the first day.
In each class there is a maximum twelve students.
In addition to regular classes, afternoon activities are
offered daily. Free access to Lido Beach.
COLLEGE
CREDITS
Students are registered at Broome College, a unit of the State University of New
York. These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and
universities in the United States and abroad. However, students are advised to
discuss them with their academic advisors and seek college approval before
registering in the summer session abroad.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES & TRAVEL
The program includes daily activities and excursions, La Biennale de Venezia, a
cultural festival featuring art, music, dance, and drama and more.
HOUSING AND MEALS
Students have their own bedrooms in apartments shared with
other students. Although all apartments meet the schools requirements, each
apartment is different and early application and payment is strongly advised to
be placed in the most desirable locations. Linens, towels, utilities and other
essentials are included. Apartments have laundry facilities.
Meals are not included but each apartment has a kitchen
and there are several supermarkets close by, one of which is across from the
Institute. University canteens at the University of Venice are nearby and are
available to students for an inexpensive lunch or dinner.
INCLUDED
The following are the items included in the cost of the program:
- Round trip airfare from several
international airports in the USA to Venice and back to the airport of
origin in the USA.
- Transfer in Venice
to your housing.
- Room accommodations in single
bedrooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms.
- Tuition and fees in U.S. and
abroad.
- Instructional materials in Venice.
- Services provided by the Council on
Overseas Language Education in the U.S. and Venice.
- Assistance in obtaining a low cost
cell phone for use in Italy for students who want it.
- U.S. travel health insurance.
Covers the cost of medical attention, hospitalization and repatriation
during the length of the program.
NOT INCLUDED
Some important items that are not included in the cost of the program:
- Ground
transportation in the U.S. or in Italy with the exception of transportation
to and from the airport in Italy to your place of residence and during tours
as per itinerary.
- Meals.
- Additional
travel and personal expenses.
- Cost and
effort of obtaining a passport, or other travel documentation.
- Telephone
calls.
- Any other
expenses not specifically included in this document.
PROGRAM PRICE
$5,580 (3 weeks) – with $1,000 scholarship: $4,580
SCHOLARSHIP
Once your application is received and reviewed by the scholarship committee you
will be informed about the status of your application. It usually takes between
three and ten working days for the review to be completed and the notification
to be mailed to you.
DEPARTURE & RETURN DATES
The directors expect to travel on a US Airways flight in the early evening out
of Philadelphia on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Students are welcome to join them or
to use other designated flights. Those wishing to make their own travel
arrangements will be issued a refund for this portion of the program cost.
Students should arrive in Venice on Sunday June 19.
Classes start on Monday, June 20. Apartments must be vacated on Saturday, July 9

ASSISTANCE
What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?
"Adventures
in Education"
SM personnel will be available for the duration of the program. They are
responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are
provided to the participants. They are also available to assist in routine
and emergency matters that may confront participants. Students are reminded
that in everyday living, situations will arise where students will need to be
responsible for their own welfare and safety.
Program directors accompany the students to Venice and
will be in residence for the duration of the program. They have a wide range of
experience living and traveling in Italy,
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The purpose of the Italian language courses is to teach
students spoken and written Italian. The direct method is combined with grammar
and syntax to give equal importance to the oral and written aspects.
The course is an intense, fast-moving course designed for
students who wish to learn the language in all of its various aspects (speaking,
reading, writing, and listening comprehension). Each level offers four hours (an
academic hour = 50 minutes) of lessons per day, Monday through Friday.

This intensive course addresses beginner students who have
no knowledge of the Italian language. At the end of the course, students will be
able to communicate in every day’s most frequent situations, using basic
