INTERNATIONAL HOUSE
MADRID - SPAIN
HIGH SCHOOL TWO  WEEKS SUMMER PROGRAM OVERVIEW     

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION       
This fifteen day program consists of ten days of intensive Spanish language study for high school students who have completed at least one year of Spanish. You will be given a placement test the first day of classes to let you know whether or not the course you selected is appropriate for your level of proficiency. Classes take place Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You will also attend afternoon activities consisting of visits to parks, places of recreation, museums, historical sites, department stores and monuments Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and evening “tertulias” consisting of discussion and analysis of the Spanish language classes, afternoon activities. Saturday and Sunday tours to Avila and Salamanca.  You will enjoy approximately three hours of free time every day, have free internet access, either by using the school computers or by connecting your laptop, if you own one, to the internet line available in your room at the dorm.

STAFF
A full time Resident Director, and supervisory personnel will be in residence for the duration of each program. They will be providing supervision, counseling and all other necessary services, as well as accompanying you in all program-sponsored activities. The Resident Director will meet you at the designated USA airport, travel with you to the location of the program abroad, and return with you at its conclusion.

COLLEGE CREDITS  
You may earn three undergraduate college credits. These credits are fully transferable and are accepted by most colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. However, you are advised to discuss them with your academic advisors and seek school approval before registering in the summer session abroad.

INCLUDED
Round trip air transportation from New York,  Los Angeles  and several other international airports in the USA to Madrid and back to the airport of origin in the USA. Transfers to and from the airport in Spain and your residence in Spain. Room accommodations in air-conditioned college dormitories. Three meals a day consisting of continental breakfast, lunch and dinner at dormitory facilities.  Tuition (up to six college credits), books, program activities and the cost of transportation to and from program activities. Limited health insurance; medical attention; prescriptions.

NOT INCLUDED
Personal expenses, passport, visa, transportation to and from your home to the designated USA   airport.

CURFEW
You will be  required to be in your  room no later than 11:30 p.m. A room check will be conducted at 11:30 p.m. The Resident Director reserves the right to enter your  room and check if you are present after 11:30 p.m.

TELEPHONE CALLS
You may not receive telephone calls between 11:30 pm and 7:00 am (Spanish time). In case of an emergency, your parents or guardians  must contact the Resident Director during those hours.

DEPARTURE & RETURN DATES
Departure and return dates have not been confirmed and are subject to change.  Those dates will be confirmed on May 2, 2012 You must travel with the program from the designated New York, Los Angeles or  several other international airports in the USA to the location of the program abroad.

PROGRAM PRICE WITH  $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP $3,960 

SCHOLARSHIP 
If you are accepted to participate in the program you will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.   

What kind of assistance and supervision is provided?

ASSISTANCE
Adventures in Education" ^SM  personnel will be available for the duration of each program.  They are responsible for making sure that all of the services included in the program are provided to the participants.  They are also available to assist in routine and emergency matters that may confront participants. 

SUPERVISION
Participants in our high school programs are subject to a set of strict ground rules that apply to areas such as attendance at mandatory activities, behavior in the dormitories, curfews, consumption of alcoholic beverages, use of illegal drugs, and visitors.  Participants and their legal guardians must agree to these ground rules in writing before being accepted into the program.  "Adventures in Education" ^SM  staff members monitor compliance with the ground rules to the extent reasonably possible.  Any participant who violates one of the ground rules may be dismissed from the program at the sole discretion of the Resident Director.  Participants who are dismissed from the program are returned to the United States as soon as possible at their own expense. 

COURSE  DESCRIPTIONS

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH
Forty five hours of instruction. Three college credits. This course is designed to develop strong communication skills.  It begins with a rapid review of the basic grammatical structures already studied by the students in their first year.  This brief review is followed by more advanced structures needed to acquire better proficiency.  Classroom activities progress from drills to exercises of a more communicative approach.

ADVANCED SPANISH
Forty five hours of instruction. Three college credits. This course is a continuation of the Intermediate Spanish Course.  While verbal communication continues to be the focus of classroom activities, reading and writing skills are emphasized. Students read essays and articles written by contemporary authors, prepare discussions around them and finally submit a written analysis.  Students are expected to write and revise a series of compositions designed to improve their structural knowledge of the language at the third year.

SPANISH CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION 
Forty five hours of instruction. Three college credits..  This course studies the ethnic, philosophical, political, literary and artistic development of the country being visited, its people and culture and is taught in Spanish and in English.
